Understanding the KP Cuspal Chart
Krishnamurti Paddhati was developed by K. S. Krishnamurti in the mid-twentieth century to make Vedic astrology answer a question precisely rather than broadly. Its method is to read cusps instead of signs, and to push the division of the zodiac far enough that two people born minutes apart no longer share a chart.
Three things follow from that, and they are what this page shows. Houses are measured cusp to cusp, so they are unequal. Every point — each cusp and each planet — is classified four times over: the sign it falls in, the nakshatra whose lord governs it, the sub-division inside that nakshatra, and the sub-division inside that. And a house is judged not by what sits in it but by which planets signify it, which is what the two significator tables set out.
The frame stays inside KP. Astrovarg uses KP New by default — the 2003 Balachandran correction — and you can also select KP, the original Krishnamurti ayanamsha. KP-Placidus remains the fixed house system either way. Changing the ayanamsha can shift sidereal positions slightly and with them the finest KP classifications, while the same cuspal framework is kept. What it will not do is take you outside KP: a chart built on Lahiri with KP significators is not a KP chart in a different frame, it is two systems mixed, and no tradition reads it.

Is the chart shown here calculated live?

Which ayanamsha and house system does this use?
KP-Placidus always, and by default the KP New ayanamsha. You can also select KP, the original Krishnamurti realization, using the control above the form. Those two are the only choices offered, because both are Krishnamurti's own — a chart built on a different zero point altogether is not a KP chart in another frame, it is two systems mixed. The house system is not a setting at all. Whichever ayanamsha you pick is shown in the Chart Basis, so you can always see what was used.
Why are the houses unequal?
Because KP measures a house from one cusp to the next, and the cusps come from Placidus, which divides each quadrant of the sky in time rather than in degrees. A house can therefore span more or less than 30°, and its width changes with your birth latitude and time.
Why does the chart show signs in the boxes rather than houses?
That is how KP charts are conventionally drawn. The twelve boxes are fixed zodiac signs, and each house cusp is placed in the box its longitude falls in, marked with a Roman numeral and its degree. It has to work this way: because cusps are unequal, one sign can contain two cusps and another none, so a chart whose boxes were houses could not show where the cusps actually fall.
What is the sub lord, and why does KP care about it so much?
Each nakshatra is divided into unequal sub-divisions in the proportion of the Vimshottari dasha periods, and the lord of the sub-division a point falls in is its sub lord. KP treats it as the deciding factor: the sign lord shows the arena, the star lord shows the result, and the sub lord confirms or denies it.
What do A, B, C and D mean in the significator tables?
They are the four classical tiers of a significator's claim on a house: A is the star lord of a planet occupying it, B is an occupant, C is the star lord of its lord, and D is its lord. A planet appearing more than once in a tier is signifying more than once, and KP counts that repetition as strength, so it is shown rather than collapsed.
Can a KP chart be cast for any birthplace?
Almost. KP uses Placidus cusps, and Placidus is undefined inside the polar circle — roughly beyond 66.5° north or south — because the cusps there have no semi-arc to divide. For a birth at those latitudes this page says so plainly, and the Whole Sign or Bhāva Chalit chart will still give you a reading.
