About
Diwali (Deepavali), the festival of lamps, is the Amavasya, the new moon, of Kartika, as calendars in the north name the month. On this evening Lakshmi is worshipped, usually with Ganesha, and homes are lit with rows of lamps. It is kept on the day the Amavasya holds in Pradosh, the early night after sunset, and the Lakshmi Puja is done in that Pradosh.

Questions
Which day is Diwali this year?
It is kept on the day the Amavasya holds in Pradosh in your city, the date shown at the top of this page. When the Amavasya covers both evenings, or neither, the later evening is taken; a calendar with another rule can show the other day.
Why does the Lakshmi Puja time differ from city to city?
Pradosh begins at sunset and, in the reckoning we use, lasts the first three of the night's fifteen parts, about a fifth of the night. Sunset and the length of the night differ by city, so each city has its own window.
Some calendars give a shorter Lakshmi Puja time. Why?
Many calendars narrow the puja to the part of Pradosh when a fixed sign, usually Vrishabha (Taurus), is rising. The texts we follow give Pradosh itself, so we show the whole Pradosh window and do not compute the narrower one.
Can the puja be done later in the night?
Many families worship in Pradosh, the window shown; others worship later, as their family or community does, and in Bengal the Kali Puja is at night. The Nirnaya Sindhu regards an Amavasya that covers both the Pradosh and midnight as the best.
