About
Karwa Chauth (Karaka Chaturthi) is the Chaturthi of the waning moon in Kartika, as calendars in the north name the month. Married women keep a day-long fast and worship Gauri (Parvati) with Shiva, Ganesha and Kartikeya, praying for their husband's long life and the family's well-being. The fast is broken after the moon rises, with an offering of water to the moon. It is kept on the day the Chaturthi holds at moonrise.
Questions
Which day is Karwa Chauth this year?
It is kept on the day the Chaturthi holds at moonrise in your city, the date shown at the top of this page. A calendar that follows another rule, or a city abroad, can arrive at a different day.
What is the date in the USA or Canada?
We compute Karwa Chauth for cities in India. Abroad, the same rule applies to the local moonrise, so the day can fall on a different calendar date from India's. A panchang made for your own city is the right guide.
Why is the moonrise time different from city to city?
The moon rises later as you go west, and its rising also shifts with latitude, so each city has its own time. The time shown is the moment the moon's upper edge reaches a flat horizon, with the air's refraction, which is how moonrise is defined. Hills, tall buildings or haze can delay the first sight by a few minutes, and calendars that define moonrise differently can show a time a few minutes apart.
Can the puja be done at home, alone?
Yes. Many women keep the puja at home, alone or with family, when no group is nearby. The steps are the same: the evening puja with the karwa, the katha read or heard, and the offering to the moon once it has risen.
