About

Rama Ekadashi is the Ekadashi of the waning moon in Kartika, as calendars in the north name the month; calendars whose months end at the new moon call it Ashvina Krishna Ekadashi. It comes a few days before Diwali. Ramā is also a name of Lakshmi, and many worship Vishnu with Lakshmi on this day. People keep a fast and break it on the next day, the Dvadashi, in the Parana window.

Questions

Which day is Rama Ekadashi this year?

It is kept on the day computed for your city, the date shown at the top of this page. When the Ekadashi holds at two sunrises, Smarta and Vaishnava calendars can keep different days.

Why does the Parana not begin at sunrise?

The texts ask that the first quarter of the Dvadashi, called Hari-vasara, pass before the fast is broken. When that quarter runs past sunrise, the window opens later in the morning; the time shown for your city already allows for it.

Can the fast be kept with water or fruit?

Yes. The fast is kept in many ways, from nirjala to fruit and milk; each person chooses by their health and their family's practice.
