About
Utpanna Ekadashi is the Ekadashi of the waning moon in Margashirsha, as calendars in the north name the month; calendars whose months end at the new moon call it Kartika Krishna Ekadashi. "Utpanna" means "born": the Padma Purana tells of Ekadashi's birth on this day, as a power that came forth from Vishnu. Many who take up the Ekadashi fasts begin with this one. The fast is broken on the next day, the Dvadashi, in the Parana window.

Questions
Which day is Utpanna Ekadashi this year?
It is kept on the day computed for your city, the date shown at the top of this page. When the Ekadashi holds at two sunrises, Smarta and Vaishnava calendars can keep different days.
Why do many begin the Ekadashi fasts with Utpanna?
Because the Padma Purana places Ekadashi's birth on this day, many who take up the Ekadashi fasts as a yearly practice begin with it. Others begin on any Ekadashi, as their family or teacher advises.
Can the fast be kept with fruit or milk?
Yes. The Nirnaya Sindhu, quoting the Narada Purana, allows roots, fruit, milk and water for those who cannot keep a full fast; each person chooses by health and tradition.
